🎭 Meet Paul Robeson, the trailblazing actor, singer, and activist who made history as the first Black actor to play Othello in the 1940s Broadway revival.

⚖️ Before finding success on Broadway, Paul worked as a lawyer by day and moonlighted as an actor in local YMCA productions. The overt racism that Robeson experienced in the law office [and his passion for acting] convinced him to take up acting full-time.

✊🏾Offstage, Paul was also a passionate and outspoken advocate of civil rights and social justice, using his global platform to fight for justice despite facing government backlash.

In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re celebrating the Black trailblazers who have made a lasting impact on theater and beyond.

Today, we’re spotlighting Florence Mills (1896-1927), a Broadway star who confronted racial stereotypes, broke down barriers, and won over black and white audiences alike.

🎭 In 1921, Florence made her Broadway debut as the lead in “Shuffle Along,” the first all-black production on Broadway.

🌟 After the show was met with great success, she would go on to star in several other projects, chipping away at stereotypes that clung to Black performers. “Our prejudices…melt away when Florence Mills begins to sing,” wrote a British critic.

🗞 In 1925, she was photographed by Edward Steichen for Vogue becoming the first black person featured in a full page in the magazine.

Inside Broadway’s President and CEO, Michael Presser, just spent a wonderful time in Albany meeting with several New York State elected officials. It was a productive two days of sharing Inside Broadway’s mission of bringing the magic of Broadway to New York’s schools!
